last night I was double dating with my best friend in his 78-Z-28. Tonight I'm a Grandad. What the hell happened! :-) The class of 79 may be grandparents now. But, we still know how to have a good time! Sometimes we have to remind our kids of that fact.

I saw them live during this period. It was after they had just released "Sunflower." Saw them promoting the album at the Whiskey in West Hollywood. It was a great experience. "Sunflower" didn't score big (a shame). But the album they did after that, "Surf's Up", really did. And they were off and running in their creative, early '70's run. Along with the the aforementioned two albums, they also gave us "Carl and the Passions - So Tough", and "Holland". Four brilliant, very creative albums in a row. Their new direction. The crowd they were performing for here really appreciated their new musical direction. That creative run ended in 1974, when Capitol released "Endless Summer", trading on the nostalgia craze begun by the movie "Anerican Graffiti." A double album which featured their great '60's hits and singles. It went double-platinum. Great marketing and timeing on Capitol's part. But it also spelled the end of the Beach Boys' early '70's creative period. Their new stadium fans wanted to hear their oldies hits, not "It's About Time" and "Feel Flows." So the Boys went from giving us a great album such as "Holland" in 1973, to "15 Big Ones" in 1976...

Meant to say "Endless Summer" included their great '60's hits and album cuts.

The legendary Russ Kunkle on drums. He played on Carol Kings Tapestry and Joni Mitchell's Blue and James Taylor Fire and Rain along with all of CSNY's albums and toured with them as well, Dylan,Harrison, BB King and the list goes on and on. His drumming here is so good he makes a great song even greater carrying the fabulous beat!
